Multiplying polynomials

Mathematics — first biennium · Lesson

Polynomials · 5

Every term meets every term

When multiplying two polynomials, apply distribution repeatedly: every term of the first polynomial multiplies every term of the second. Only after building every product should you combine like terms.

With two terms in each factor, four products must appear before reduction.

What you need to know before the exercises

In this lesson: Multiply every term of one polynomial by every term of the other and correctly combine like terms.

You can already assume: Monomial times polynomial, addition and reduction.

Guide
  1. Take the highest-degree term of the first polynomial and multiply it by every term of the second.
  2. Repeat with each remaining term of the first polynomial.
  3. At the end, collect and combine only like terms.
