Polynomials: recognition and reduction

Mathematics — first biennium · Lesson

Polynomials · 1

A polynomial is an algebraic sum of monomials

To reduce a polynomial, find like monomials: they have the same literal part. Add or subtract only their coefficients. Unlike terms remain separate.

Formula matematica

3x² and −2x² are like terms; 5x and 4 do not combine with them.

Rule
Formula matematica

The literal part must be identical.

What you need to know before the exercises

In this lesson: Recognize a polynomial and reduce it by combining only like terms.

You can already assume: Like monomials and their addition/subtraction.

Guide
  1. Group terms with the same literal part.
  2. Operate on their coefficients.
  3. Keep unlike terms separate.
Formula matematica

Write it as on paper. Terms may be in a different order, as long as the polynomial is fully reduced.
