Mathematics — first biennium · Monomials
Similar monomials already have the same literal part. To add or subtract them, operate only on the coefficients and keep the literal part unchanged, including its exponents.
Exponent laws are used in products: x²·x² = x⁴. In the sum 3x² + 5x², x² stays x².
In this lesson: Reduce algebraic sums of similar monomials by combining coefficients and preserving the literal part.
You can already assume: Similar monomials and integer addition/subtraction.

First calculate only the new coefficient. Then attach exactly the same literal part.
ConceptStep separates what is required from what is recommended or useful as reinforcement. Only required prerequisites block your progress.
Relationships: solid line = required · dashed line = recommended · dotted line = reinforcement.
