Adding and subtracting similar monomials

Mathematics — first biennium · Monomials

Monomials · 4

Change the coefficient, not the literal part

Similar monomials already have the same literal part. To add or subtract them, operate only on the coefficients and keep the literal part unchanged, including its exponents.

Rule
  1. Check that the literal part is the same.
  2. Add or subtract the coefficients, respecting their signs.
  3. Copy the literal part without changing the exponents.
Mistake to avoid

Exponent laws are used in products: x²·x² = x⁴. In the sum 3x² + 5x², x² stays x².

What you need to know before the exercises

In this lesson: Reduce algebraic sums of similar monomials by combining coefficients and preserving the literal part.

You can already assume: Similar monomials and integer addition/subtraction.
