Mathematics — first biennium · Monomials
The degree of a monomial with respect to a variable is that variable's exponent. The total degree is the sum of all exponents in the literal part. The coefficient does not affect the degree.
degree in x = 2 · in y = 4 · total degree = 2 + 4 = 6
A non-zero constant monomial has degree 0.
In the school convention used here, the degree of the zero monomial is left undefined. Degree exercises therefore use non-zero monomials.
In this lesson: Determine the degree with respect to one variable and the total degree of a non-zero monomial.
You can already assume: Coefficient, literal part and normal form.

For the degree with respect to y, look only at its exponent. For the total degree, add all variable exponents.
