Dividing monomials

Mathematics — first biennium · Monomials

Monomials · division

Divide coefficients, subtract exponents

In the chosen school domain rational coefficients are allowed, so the numerical quotient may be a fraction. For the literal part, subtract equal-base exponents in dividend-minus-divisor order. If a difference is negative, the quotient is not a monomial because a variable would appear in the denominator.

Formula matematica

−8 ÷ 2 = −4; a⁵ ÷ a² = a³; b² ÷ b = b.

Formula matematica

Here x would have exponent −1, so the result is not a monomial in the domain used in this path.

What you need to know before the exercises

In this lesson: Divide monomials with rational coefficients, subtract equal-base exponents and recognize when the quotient leaves the monomial domain.

You can already assume: Multiplying monomials, fractions, sign rules and quotient of powers.

Guide
  1. Check exponents: the divisor must not have a larger exponent than the dividend on the same variable.
  2. If the quotient is a monomial, divide the coefficients and reduce the fraction.
  3. Subtract exponents: dividend minus divisor.
Formula matematica
Is the quotient a monomial?

If you answered No, leave the result fields blank. If you answered Yes, write the result as you would on paper.
