Mathematics — first biennium · Monomials
In the chosen school domain rational coefficients are allowed, so the numerical quotient may be a fraction. For the literal part, subtract equal-base exponents in dividend-minus-divisor order. If a difference is negative, the quotient is not a monomial because a variable would appear in the denominator.
−8 ÷ 2 = −4; a⁵ ÷ a² = a³; b² ÷ b = b.
Here x would have exponent −1, so the result is not a monomial in the domain used in this path.
In this lesson: Divide monomials with rational coefficients, subtract equal-base exponents and recognize when the quotient leaves the monomial domain.
You can already assume: Multiplying monomials, fractions, sign rules and quotient of powers.
