Model → solution → meaning

Solving a problem does not mean looking for a calculation immediately. First choose the unknown, then build the equation, solve it, and finally interpret the value in the context.

Formula matematica

Three items cost 24 euros: if x is the price of one, 3x=24, so x=8 euros.

What you need to know before the exercises

In this lesson: Complete the cycle text → unknown → equation → solution → interpretation in context.

You can already assume: Modeling and solving linear equations.

How to find x
  1. Start from the final question: which quantity are you being asked to find?
  2. That quantity is x. A number already given in the text is known data, not the unknown.
  3. Now reread the text and connect the known data to x: how many times it appears, what is added or subtracted, and what the total is.
  4. Build the equation without jumping straight to the solution.
  5. Solve using the equivalence principles and interpret the result in context.
Problem

Five identical tickets plus a fixed 3 euro fee cost 28 euros altogether. How much is one ticket?

Interpret the result in context as: euros.
