Mathematics — first biennium · Lesson
Order matters in a Cartesian product: the first component comes from the first set, the second from the second set.
Prerequisites: Sets and membership
Goal: Build A×B and understand ordered pairs.
In this lesson: Build A×B and understand ordered pairs.
New concept: In the Cartesian product A×B, elements are ordered pairs (a,b): the first entry comes from A and the second from B. In general, (a,b) and (b,a) are not the same pair.
How to proceed: Check the first and second components separately: an ordered pair is not a two-element set whose entries can be swapped.
You can already assume: Sets and membership.

Check the first and second components separately: an ordered pair is not a two-element set whose entries can be swapped.
Data / situation: A={1,2}, B={a,b,c}. Also assess the pair (2,b).
