Mathematics — first biennium · Lesson
Transformations resemble equations, but multiplying or dividing both sides by a negative number reverses the inequality sign.
Prerequisites: Intervals and equivalence principles
Goal: Solve linear inequalities, reversing the sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative number.
In this lesson: Solve linear inequalities, reversing the sign when multiplying or dividing by a negative number.
New concept: In an inequality you may add or subtract the same quantity on both sides without changing the sign. If you multiply or divide both sides by a negative number, the inequality sign reverses.
How to proceed: First isolate the x-term. At the division step look only at the sign of the divisor: if it is negative, reverse the sign exactly once.
You can already assume: Intervals and equivalence principles.
